Smileys/Emojis can be a fun and effective way to convey emotions and add personality to text-based communication. Emojis can help to clarify ones tone and convey emotions that might be difficult to express through text alone.
But where and who should we use the emojis on? And as Christians how best can we utilize emojis?
I reached out to Pastor Danny Gift of Life Church International – Malindi who had this to say;
“Nafikiri kuna umhimu wa kujua kila emoji na maana yake kabla ya kuitumia. Kwa sababu nafikiri those smileys ama emojis zina incentive ama ziko na maana yake. Kila emoji ina message inasuppose kupass.
“Mostly zinareflect on emotions or feelings like instead ya kufinya maneno unaweka emoji ya kucheka na kama uko na huzuni unaweka emoji ya kilio. I think mostly we need to understand what an emoji implies what emotion ama what communication so that we don’t use emojis in the wrong concept.
“As Christians vile tunapimwa kwa maneno ndivyo tutapimwa kwa emojis because emoji ni representations ya maneno ambayo hayangesemeka. So I think people need to know when to use an emoji and what exactly they are saying because ile emoji umetumia ndiyo mtu ataielewa na atabeba what kind of communication you are putting across.
“Halafu pia nimekuja kurealise watu wengi hawajui what the emojis they are using mean. The last thing I would say is just to be careful. Don’t just throw emojis everywhere. Kuna msee alipose challenge kwa wanaume akasema, “Zile emoji unatumia your female friends do you use the same to your wife?”.
“But emoji sio mbaya watu watumie emoji bwana (laughs).”
I did a spot-check on a few emojis and what they mean, have a look.
😀 – Grinning Face: This emoji depicts a face with a big grin and smiling eyes. It expresses happiness, joy, or excitement.
😂 – Face with Tears of Joy : This emoji depicts a face with tears of laughter streaming down its cheeks, indicating that something is extremely funny.
😊 – Smiling Face with Smiling Eyes : This emoji depicts a face with a warm smile and blushing cheeks, conveying feelings of happiness, contentment, or appreciation.
🤔 – Thinking Face : This emoji depicts a face with a raised eyebrow and a hand on the chin, indicating that the person is deep in thought, considering a question or problem.
😭 – Loudly Crying Face : This emoji depicts a face with tears streaming down its cheeks, indicating that the person is overwhelmed with sadness or emotional pain.
🤗 – Hugging Face : This emoji depicts a face with open hands, indicating that the person is ready to give a hug or receive one. It is often used to express feelings of love, support, or gratitude.
🙏 – Folded Hands : This emoji depicts two hands pressed together in a praying position, indicating a request for blessings, forgiveness, or help. It is often used to express gratitude, appreciation, or hope.
🤷♀️ – Woman Shrugging : This emoji depicts a woman with raised shoulders and open hands, indicating confusion, uncertainty, or lack of knowledge.
💩 – Pile of Poo : This emoji depicts a smiling poop with eyes and a mouth, often used to indicate something unpleasant or disgusting.
Emojis that are associated with love and romance
❤️ – Red Heart : The most iconic symbol of love, this red heart is used to express love, affection, and deep emotions.
💕 – Two Hearts : This emoji features two pink hearts, often used to express love between two people.
😘 – Face Blowing a Kiss: This emoji depicts a face with puckered lips and a heart, indicating a kiss or love.
😍 – Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes : This emoji depicts a face with hearts instead of eyes, indicating that the person is in love or infatuated with someone or something.
💋 – Kiss Mark : This emoji depicts a pair of lips, often used to indicate a kiss or romantic gesture.

The black heart emoji (🖤) is often used to express various emotions, including sadness, grief, darkness, or a sense of morbidity. It can also be used to express a sense of rebellion or non-conformity.
The black color of the heart can symbolize a number of things, such as death, evil, or mystery. In some cases, the black heart emoji may also be used in a positive context to indicate a deep, intense love or admiration, such as when used by members of the goth or alternative subcultures.
