There’s never a dull moment, whether it’s a fresh take on gameplay, his oozing attitude or the fantastic music that continues to bless this franchise. With the release of Sonic Origins, Sega decided to delist all of the classic titles, resulting in this game being the only legal method to play Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Sonic 3 and Knuckles. While it’s my least favourite game out of this collection, I did appreciate using the drop dash to progress through stages faster because this game is notoriously known for being a mixed bag in terms of level design .
- As a trip down memory lane, Sonic Generations is a wonderful nostalgia trip.
- What he didn’t know was that doing so ended up activating Gerald’s giant middle finger to the world.
- He returned in the sequels Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros.
Levels are more attuned to the game’s controls, the annoying hub worlds are gone, and the Chao Gardens are improved. While Sonic the Hedgehog 2 learned plenty from Sonic 1, it’s still not perfect. Its difficulty is uneven, level design is hit-or-miss, and special stages are a bit of a mess (and nigh unbeatable if you have a computer-controlled Tails stuck with you). The theme of “Sonic Adventure 2” was good versus evil, and it ⇒Emulator Games Online featured the videogame debut of both Rouge the Batand Shadow the Hedgehog, a new, anti-hero rival for Sonic.
The Entire Sonic The Hedgehog Timeline Explained
An ambitious Sonic game that launched in the midst of “the Holy Quadrilogy” as it were, Sonic CD featured a time travelling mechanic that allowed players to visit the past and future of the levels they were in. Performing certain actions in these alternative levels would then allow players to unlock the best ending, which is certainly a lot more complicated than nabbing every Chaos Emerald from the special stages. But one of the most noticeable changes to Sonic’s history is the game itself. Yes, there are high-speed sections, but a majority of the trailer didn’t have much of that. Instead, you see the four heroes jumping, swinging and solving puzzles. The trailer never seems to show off the speed equation for Sonic the Hedgehog.
It was the slimmer, modern Sonic side-scrolling his way through a couple of levels. It wasn’t the longest adventure of Sonic’s life; initially planned as an episodic game, a sequel followed in 2012 but the planned third game never surfaced. A sequel followed in 2001 to celebrate the blue hedgehog’s tenth anniversary. But Sonic Adventure 2 was the last mascot game to release on a SEGA console. In large parts SEGA and Sonic shared the same downward trajectory in the eyes of the fans for the many years following the demise of the Dreamcast. Then, in 1999, came Sonic Adventure, and the modernisation of Sonic the Hedgehog we know today.

Many have argued that Sega should have waited until at least 2023 to releaseSonic Frontiersdue to concerns about the game’s final quality, but the company has seemingly refused to budge in this regard. The game will be available on all major console platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, as well as on PC via Steam. Console players who still haven’t been able to upgrade to the next generation of PlayStation or Xbox need not worry, either. The game will be available on both PS5 and PS4, as well as on Xbox One alongside the Xbox Series X and S versions of the console. If players were worried that Frontiers would simply be a Sonic experience copy and pasted onto a desolate open world, the latest story trailer should assuage those fears.
Because it gives us a reason to mention the phenomenal soundtrack that’s easily one of the best in the series. Composed by Hideki Naganuma of Jet Set Radio fame, his funky fresh beats fit the vibe of Sonic perfectly, and we’re genuinely surprised he hasn’t contributed to the series since. Sonic’s campaign is understandably the most robust, taking place across 10 unique stages sprinkled throughout three large, explorable hub zones. Back in the day, Sonic Adventure was arguably the perfect childhood game, with the sheer amount of environment to explore and secrets to discover.
