Businessmen and women from Kwajiwa in Malindi Sub-county, Kilifi County, have called on the government to provide assistance amidst the ongoing tough economic times.
Led by Ahmad Abdi, they expressed concern that their businesses are on the brink of closing down if help does not come soon.
Speaking during the distribution of foodstuffs donated by Muslim Charity UK, Abdi urged well-wishers and the government to step in and support their struggling businesses.
“I am grateful to Muslim Charity UK for stepping in during this time of need. Our businesses are struggling, and without this kind of aid, we might be forced to close down. I urge the government to collaborate with such charities to support those of us who are striving to keep our businesses afloat,” Abdi said.
This sentiment was echoed by Mwanahamisi Ali Omari, a potato seller in Kwajiwa.
Abdulrazak Mohammed, Executive Director of the Centre for Civic Education and Good Governance Malindi, informed us that the project by Muslim Charity UK aims to promote stability for businesses not only in Kwajiwa and Shella but throughout the entire Malindi Sub-county.
“We have spent a total of Ksh 250,000 to support the businessmen and women in Kwajiwa and Shella, but our goal is to strengthen businesses across the entire Malindi region. This project will run until 2025, with a target of helping over 50 businessmen and women who are in dire need of such assistance.”
Moureen Kawira, a volunteer at the Centre for Civic Education and Good Governance, added that they have effective mechanisms for identifying businesses in need, which include working closely with local authorities.
